The Tweets of a Crazed Rodeo Fan

Wednesday, 21 November 2012 02:28

While searching through my archives of tweets and twitter conversations from 2012, I came across my favourite live-tweeter from the season. Just by skimming the 20 tweets from the performance, I could reflect back and could re-live the show, with a giggle. I've pieced together the performance from Saturday Night at the Kapuskasing Lumberjack Festival Rawhide Rodeo - July 28th using the guy's tweets and my memory rekindled from each tweet.  Enjoy!
***note: PG-13 text below***

Tweet >>
@CJmcewen#kaprodeo is a damn good sponge bob of a time
Recap >>
This is the first tweet.  At the start of the show, #kaprodeo was identified as the official hashtag of the event.  Near the beginning, an animal refuses to leave the arena, announcer (me) and clown re-position and re-focus their attention while "The Sponge Bob Square Pants" Theme Song plays as filler.

@CJmcewen#kaprodeo I have a ram 3500 - and I want rubber boots more

Val Albert Motors is a presenting sponsor and Ram (pronounced Raaaaaaam!) has been promoted heavily to this point; and now a live Facebook contest is initiated to promote Muck Boots

@CJmcewen#kaprodeo the official hashtag should be #badassrodeo - just sayin

The performance was solid, the energy from the Kapuskasing Lumberjack Festival Rawhide Rodeo spectators was high, there were some good rides and wrecks... and the
#kaprodeo hashtag was promoted again

@CJmcewen#kaprodeo my rawhide rodeo name is Chubby Rider... Tell your friends.

I had recently read a few select twitter and facebook comments.  I didn't read this one aloud, but did giggle.

Tweet >>
@CJmcewen#kaprodeo my friend April wants to be your french speaking assistant... You're butchering 50% of our national language
Recap >>
Kapuskasing is an extremely bi-lingual town with a majority of residents speaking French-first.  I announce many event names, towns, scores and times in French and English, or attempt to.  I was fluent in French at the end of High School after studying the "language of love" from grades 4 through 13, but have forgotten 90% of it.  I recently did the math between now and high school graduation.  Now - Graduation = Scary Number

Tweet >>
@CJmcewen#kaprodeo dude... Don't short change me - tell'em what I said #lol
Recap >>
I had paraphrased the earlier French tweet aloud.

Tweet >>
@CJmcewen#kaprodeo faster indeed

During the specialty act, 'The Charlotte Flames' with Austin Stewart, I yelled a-la-carny ride guy "...do you wanna go faster??...."

Tweet >>
@CJmcewen#kaprodeo ill get on a bull - you just set me up brother

Committee guy attempted to ride a bull.  I said something along the lines of, "any more takers?" as a joke.  It wasn't the first attempt by committee guy.

We gave out lots of prizes throughout the show.  I ended up tracking the guy down and had drinks with him and his entourage.  It was great to meet an engaged twitter-er!

It's well known that I am on Facebook and Twitter a lot, even during shows.  It's a great experience to see instant-feedback of the show as it progresses, and see what the fans like or relate to.  And with a power-tweeter like @CJmcewen, it's awesome to reflect back to that performance so many months ago, and re-live the highlights, almost just as they happened.

Xtreme Cowboy Racing Is Rising Up in Ontario

The newest sport that's taking over the Equine World is Extreme Cowboy Racing.  Billed as a "Family Cowboy Sport for all Riding Levels", it is open to riders with various backgrounds, and mounts of the Horse, Mule or Pony Kind.

The brainchild of Craig Cameron, an internationally recognized and award-winning horsemanship clinician, Extreme Cowboy Racing is a balance of Horsemanship and Speed, in celebration of the greatest animal on earth, the Horse.

The Sport has been featured at the Calgary Stampede, as the "Cowboy Up Challenge", and at Canada's Outdoor Equine Expo in Canada, while experiencing rapid growth across the United States, since its launch as a recognized association, the Extreme Cowboy Association in 2008, has created a community and competition spanning 17 Regions culminating point to the EXCA World Finals in Texas.

A course is set with approximately 10 obstacles depending on the level of the class.  The obstacles are challenging, and their accomplishment exemplifies a trusting, broke horse, and a relaxed and rewarding rider.  Obstacles may feature a ground-tying component, lead change, side-pass, speed, stop, roll-back, etc., in addition to out of the paradigm conditions to simulate "ranch work" or "trail riding".  Some examples would include:

  • ground tie a horse, crawl through a tunnel maze made of straw bales and remount;
  • dally a rope to a saddle horn and raise a flag;
  • jump over a series of obstacles (i.e. straw bale or log jumps);
  • transport an object from a-b by carrying it;
  • transport an object by dragging it;
  • go over a tarp with branches on it;
  • sort out a cow from a herd;
  • blindfolding the horse and leading it;
  • loading the horse on a trailer; etc.

Judging is based on the obstacles, overall horsemanship and time.  Each obstacle is scored out of 10: 1 point for "Approach", 8 points for the obstacle itself, and 1 point for "departure".  Horsemanship is judged on speed, control, loose reins, straightness, correct lead changes, seat, attentiveness, etc.  And the Time is scored based on finish-time.

I first heard of the Extreme Cowboy Race when I was invited to watch at the 2011 Canada's Outdoor Equine Expo at Iron Horse in Burlington.  I missed the performance, but saw the great reviews on social media and from subsequent conversations.

In 2012, I was invited to co-host the Extreme Cowboy Race at the 2012 Canada's Outdoor Equine Expo, along side the originator, Craig Cameron.  It was an honour to be a part of the event, and I had a lot of fun throughout the event with commentary between Mr. Cameron and myself.  I learned more about horsemanship in the 2 days just working the event than I had spent years through trial and error and reading.  And, it was tied together with both the personality of Craig Cameron and the competition of the Extreme Cowboy Race.

After two consecutive Extreme Cowboy Races at COEE, a group of participants collaborated to launch an Ontario affiliate of the parent EXCA.  Ontario's Xtreme Cowboy was formed.  Their next point of business was to acquire me to MC and DJ as I had with Craig Cameron.  I again was honoured, but more excited as I enjoy the challenge of making competition interesting and engaging, and this was well out of my paradigm.

The inaugural event was in Norwood in conjunction with the Norwood Fall Fair.  We were slated for Thanksgiving Monday.  My expectation was a 2 hour "performance" as we had done in Burlington, but I was eventually informed that the entries were strong and this was going to be a 9am - 5pm kind of event.
Fortunately, my wake-up call and multiple alarms were able to wake me for a 7am set-up of sound equipment and preparation.

The event started shortly after 9am, and the "long go" of the Youth and Open Divisions carried straight through until 2pm.

What we noticed almost immediately, is that the crowd was "hooked".  The norm for a "fair show", be it rodeo, bull riding, monster trucks, is that the crowd usually watches for a half hour to an hour, and then slowly gets smaller as people go to see other parts of the fair.  A majority of the crowd stayed the duration of the go, and those that left the seats had their seats replaced by other spectators throughout.

About an hour separated the "long go" and the Finale, and again, surprisingly, a large number of spectators returned.

Reflecting on this event, it definitely is on its way to being something phenomenal.  It was the "big draw" at COEE, and it kept a crowd enthralled at a fair on Thanksgiving Weekend.  I'm certain people cancelled Family Dinner on Thanksgiving Monday to watch the event.  The participant numbers were strong for a first-outing, and lots of interest has been generated post-event to get involved.

"Paul and I attended the Norwood fair yesterday - just to see the extreme cowboy races - they were awesome - no wonder you all were smiling - what a great way to spend quality time with great horses and even better people - well done!" ~ Monica Schjott
"Amazing" ~ Dan Allen
"Extreme Cowboys at the Norwood Fair are awesome" ~ Josh Cutmore
"It was very exciting to watch. They showed a great skill." ~ Frank Lester
"It was something new and different and appealed to every personality and interest. There were a lot of different things involved and each a certain degree of difficulty.” ~ Ed Walsh, Norwood Agricultural Society President

Where Equine is a major component of entertainment or community, I believe the Extreme Cowboy Race will become a staple.  Equine Affair, Calgary Stampede, Norwood Fair, Canada's Outdoor Equine Expo… big names, but just a start.

The Third Generation of Cowboy'n

Mama's Don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys Marshall Scully the Roping Baby

My Dad started roping when I was about two years of age, and as a youth, I watched him learn the trait through trials and tribulations.  My boy, Marshall (@MarshallScully on Twitter) has spent the a fair bit of the first two years of his life watching rodeos, and roping, and whether it's a skipping rope, iPhone headset, Piggin' String or Heading Rope... he knows what it's for... ropin'!

Today I moved him up from ground work to the dummy horse.  He turns two next week.  He's gonna be a champ, for sure!

How the termination of OLG Slots at Racetracks Program affects all Ontarians

Monday, 23 July 2012 09:41

With the announcement of the end of the OLG Slots at Racetracks Program in Ontario, Ontario Horse Racing was instantly thrown into a devastating crisis.  Tracks have announced closure, and the Industry has a bleak outlook.
This crisis will affect more than Racing.  In this video, I discuss my understanding of the present, and how this will affect both the entire Equine Industry in Ontario and the Ontario Taxpayers.
If you could check out the video and share with other Ontarians, it would be a tremendous help in working towards a solution.  Also, get involved by communicating with your MPP.
Thanks for watching and sharing!

Is nothing hillbilly sacred anymore? Rocking Events with Social Media

Monday, 28 May 2012 23:30

Smoke and Radiator Fluid billows up at the 2012 Schomberg Fair Demo Derby Smoke and Radiator Fluid billows up at the 2012 Schomberg Fair Demo Derby

Bash, crash, roar… the 2012 Schomberg Agricultural Spring Fair Demolition Derby was underway, and as is the perrogative, I was using social media to enhance the spectator experience and continue the event conversation.  A Twitter User tweeted: "Smash up derbies use twitter now? Really.. Is nothing hillbilly sacred anymore?" ~ @Nikfultz.  The answer is 'No, Nikfultz, it's not'.

Let's look at the numbers.  Mr. Fultz has 40 followers on the Platform.  My twitter account, @rodeoannouncer has 2,393.  There are more high-tech rednecks following my twitter account than people that set sail on the Titanic (2,223).  My Facebook Profile facebook.com/rodeoannouncer has 2,246 connections.

When I work an event, I rarely promote my own accounts, because I am being paid to promote the event's, committee's, producer's or contractors.  Their success is qualified by insights.

For two and a half seasons, I have promoted a Facebook fanpage for a rodeo producer that now has 7,246 Likes, with the largest boosts in "likes" transpiring at events, or in the hours thereafter.  Last season, the After-Liking" approached 70/day.   Fan Page New-Like Analysis in contrast of Event Weekends Fan Page New-Like Analysis in contrast of Event Weekends

(In comparison, week-end to week-end, year to year, this past weekend in 2011 47 Likes were generated Sat/Sun, while only 7 were generated in 2012 - the difference being: I wasn't there...haha)

Joe Scully, ProRodeo MC working Twitter during Motorsports Joe Scully, ProRodeo MC working Twitter during Motorsports

To entice spectators to "like", "follow", "tweet", hashtag, share… it takes skill.  How many sites have you seen that say, "Like us on Facebook", and the link goes to… Facebook.  Or you hear something like, "use twitter keyword #my event"… and that doesn't work (it's a hashtag, and it must be one solid word.)  Take that from online to a live event, and it's a mish-mash.…then they have them as a follower or a fan… and don't do anything with them for 365 days… or barrage them with unrelated stuff (i.e. contestant alerts to a fan base of spectators, or posts on civil politics while the base of audience is state lines away…, but I digress)

Demo-derby-ing it up… according to Epilogger.com, there were over 386 Tweets about or from the Schomberg Fair the week leading up to it, and immediately following.  Of those tweets, 60 were pictures posted to twitter.

How did the Demo Derby Event Social Media stack up?

*** 40% of all of the tweets, pre-, concurrent and post of the 3-day fair and 5 day build-up… were about the Demo Derby or on Demo Derby night.

***Of the 60 photos, almost 40% of them were of Demolition Derby Cars.

What the tweeple were saying:

  • sucha gooooood night :) @emmtxr
  • We're the Biggest hicks in Schomberg!! Demolition derby!! #schombergfair #countrygirlproblems @katymacc
  • Love that twisted metal! @SeanTabares
  • this is the place to be @SiriphoneD
  • Demolition derby at Schomberg Fair. Family fun. @djalexroc
  • man I love watching the smash up derby and the smoke and flames and the car pile ups #SchombergFair @Jeremy5991
  • @rodeoannouncer Great job getting the Twitter interaction from the crowd! #SchombergFair @eekfarms
  • Gotta love demo derbys :) @pilatus_fox

The Derby?  Well it was a rockin' good time.  We crashed some cars, crowned some champions and slammed social media.  But to do that effectively, you need to have done all three first…
