Bell Lets Talk Day - $14.00 of $4.8 Million!

Wednesday, 13 February 2013 23:43

Bell Lets Talk Day raises over 4.8 Million Dollars for Mental Health Programs Bell Lets Talk Day raises over 4.8 Million Dollars for Mental Health Programs

February 12 brought the return of Bell Let's Talk Day, an annual promotion where Bell Canada donates 5 cents for every Tweet with the hashtag #BellLetsTalk, Text Message by a Bell Cell, Long Distance Call on the Bell Network or Facebook Share of a post.

In 2013 a total of $4,813,313 was raised stemming from 96,266,266 calls, texts, tweets and shares!  Of that total, 1,562,485 were tweets and retweet.

The 4.8 Million Dollar donation by Bell is an increase of 23% from the year previous, and in total the #BellLetsTalk program has committed $62,043,289.30 to Canadian mental health programs!

In my own tweeting and phone hammering, I was able to participate enough for a $14.60 donation by Bell.

This is a stellar promotion of philanthropy, but also raises some great awareness about mental health issues.  At any given time, more than 3 million Canadians face serious depression and 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a form of mental illness at some point in their lives.  Every day more than 500,000 Canadians miss work due to an affect of mental illness.

Be a blessing to someone: reach out and give a lending hand or be a willing listener.  Always make the time to talk.

The After-After-School Special

Skill Testing Question - After After School Special Skill Testing Question - After After School Special

Throughout grade and high school, I loved French.  Like loved it.  As I date myself, I went to high school at the time that there was both Grade 13 (OAC's) and Beginner, General and Advanced classes.  I studied French from Grades 4 through Advanced Grade 13 OAC and aced the course... fast tracked... by the time I was done grade 12.  I was fluent as a frenchman, and a mere four years later, I found myself lost at the Festival Western de Ste. Tite, and spent the evening partying with people and debating separatist idealogy all in the "language of love".

Now, that, was just more than a dozen years ago.  Since, I have spent a lot of time in Quebec and French-Ontario, and have great difficulty understanding what is being said; though I can broken-french my way around still.  But, I'm far from being bilingual like I was when I commenced college.

All of that studying, learning... detentions... and it's a faded memory.

On International Hand Writing Day, I thought it would be fun to post some scribbles.  Similar to my French, I soon realized that I had forgotten how to write cursive.  Looking at all of my notes on my desk, I noticed that my thoughts are forever scribbled in a mix of printing, symbols, numbers and a lil' cursive.  All of these years of texting, typing and scribbling... and the cursive "i" is a faded memory.

Long Division Question Long Division Question

A la "Smarter than a Fifth Grader", I posted some questions to Twitter and Facebook.  Suprisingly, Math... no problems with the problems.  That is an applied learning that continues on a daily basis.

These were a fun excercise... follow me on Twitter or like me on Facebook to participate in some more challenges... and see just how right you were mumbling... "when will I ever need to know this..." as a youth.

My Answers (and one is wrong):

Inspiration from Twitter and the 43rd International Finals Rodeo

Monday, 21 January 2013 02:05

When the deaf cowboy wins the steer wrestling event in the IFR, it really proves you can do anything you believe you can do. When the deaf cowboy wins the steer wrestling event in the IFR, it really proves you can do anything you believe you can do.

While enjoying International Finals Rodeo 43 online through a web broadcast, participating in an online chat and following along on twitter, I came across a stellar tweet the exudes inspiration.

Competing at his third International Finals Rodeo, Clint Thomas of Ranger, Georgia roped and wrestled in the Tiedown Roping and Steer Wrestling events.  Now an IFR veteran, the 2009 International Professional Rodeo Association Tiedown Rookie of the Year Award Winner had a great Finals in 2013.  To resounding cheers at the end of the Steer Wrestling, he was announced as the IFR 43 Steer Wrestling Champion.  However, it wouldn't have been until someone pointed at the 'Jumbotron' declaring him as champion that he would have been certain of his accomplishment, as the applause and booming announcer had fallen on deaf ears… Thomas is hearing impaired.

This talented athlete competes in one of the most intricate events and one of the toughest events of the sport.  There are many variables that come into play, and competitors rely on their travelling partners to guide them before the run.  With Thomas, his travelling partners do this via hand signals, cuing him when the arena is clear, how his horse is standing, if the steer or calf is standing good, and so forth.

His ability to overcome his perceived disadvantage, and most recent prestigious championship inspired one fan in attendance to tweet, "When the deaf cowboy wins the steer wrestling event in the IFR, it really proves you can do anything you believe you can do." ~ @carsonfosterr

This is just one story of great accomplishment from our Sport, but truly a remarkable, motivational and inspirational one in this instance.  Overcoming odds, and inspiring fans.  Cowboy.
